We were invited by the Scottish Commission for People with Learning Difficulties to quote for building a toolkit supporting the organisation’s work in building an “accessibility audit toolkit”.

The toolkit’s aim was to support other organisations as they reflected on the inclusivity of their practice, and worked on improvements, specific to supporting victims of gender-based violence with a learning disability.

SCLD’s initial aim was for the toolkit to be developed as an interactive PDF, which would simply be downloaded or printed from their website and completed locally.

However, we advised that an online approach might better suit their needs – particularly as this would include accessibility enhancements and provide detailed reporting for the charity.

What we did

We build a custom subsite for SCLD to sit as a part of their main site. It uses vibrant colours and strong branding, complete with illustrated imagery, to great effect.

The toolkit subsite provides both information about the project and the ability to access the toolkit itself – guiding users through it, section by section, including video content where appropriate.

One key area is an assessment, which users can complete online as often as they wish while they improve their practice. This simple-to-complete tool makes suggestions for further actions. Results are downloadable in spreadsheet format for organisations who wish to fill in a more detailed version of their assessment and include action points and assignments.

The toolkit was initially developed for testing by a small group of organisations, and a tight turnaround was required to ensure this was ready in time. We then continued to work with SCLD’s team on minor enhancements based on feedback from the test users, before opening the system up for public use.

Behind the scenes the system can provide data around user registrations and the use of the assessment tool. All wording, including the questions in the tool itself, can be managed by SCLD’s team going forward.

They said …

David and Jill were a great choice to take on this work for us – they delivered spectacularly!

We got exactly what we asked for, because they listened carefully at the start, helped us to think through any challenges, came up with great solutions and explained them to us clearly and without jargon. Most importantly, they were really responsive to any problems that arose on the way. They were so reliable, and quick to respond to all the many questions we threw at them! The result was a microsite that looked great with a strong visual identity, and that was easy to navigate.

We wouldn’t hesitate to bring any new work to them, and would happily recommend them to other organisations like ours in the third sector.
