A continental shift

fuzzylime was one of only a handful of businesses from across Scotland and the north of England invited to Edinburgh University yesterday to meet European Commissioner for Competition, Neelie Kroes, and discuss the challenges facing firms in the current climate.
The meeting involved representatives from a range of businesses – some longer established and others still in the process of launching – along with students from Edinburgh University and from schools, and aimed to identify gaps in the help currently offered to entrepreneurs.
As a firm that launched in the middle of the recession ourselves, it provided an excellent insight and the opportunity to identify common problems faced by other businesses, especially those in the technology sector, at the moment.
Key problems identified included the lack of help at the start-up stage – both in terms of funding and more practical support. Representatives of Scottish Enterprise agreed that more must be done, particularly at the moment, to foster an entrepreneurial culture in Scotland – and it's certainly our hope that more businesses will benefit from the discussion as they start up in the future.
The event also offered a chance to meet people from a range of exciting young firms – many of which will, hopefully, become household names in years to come!
